Last Friday (June 24th) saw thousands of students across the country complete their Junior Certificate and
Leaving Certificate exams.
According to figures from the Department of Education, over 116,000 candidates successfully completed the two and a half week exam period, which saw tests being taken in over 90 curricular subjects at higher, ordinary and foundation levels.
Education Minister Ruairi Quinn congratulated students on their achievements and paid tribute to the
teachers, parents and other supervisors who ensured the exam period ran as smoothly as possible.
He also urged those celebrating the end of their studies to ensure they act responsibly, saying: "Our students deserve to mark the end of their exams. But I hope they will celebrate sensibly and responsibly with family and friends and not put themselves or others at any risk."
Results for the Leaving Certificate will be released on August 17th, while Junior Certificate results will be announced in September.
Earlier this month, it was reported by the Irish Independent that proposed reforms to the Junior Certificate could see pupils in later years taking fewer exams in favour of more coursework-based assessment.
