Some Travellers in Ireland have asked for the government's plans to reduce their budget with regards to the
education system to be postponed.
The Catholic Parish of the Travelling People in Dublin has asked for financial reductions to be put on hold, reports RTE.
It has asked minister for education Ruairi Quinn to take a look at last year's plans to limit the budget for Traveller studies in the country, which accounts for two-thirds of the total cuts in the education sector.
Parish priest Fr Derek Farrell told the news provider that these reductions could have an impact on the Travelling community in Ireland, saying primary children will not be able to realise their full potential if they go ahead.
He added that the progress being made to encourage kids to attend
secondary school could be jeopardised as a result of these budget restrictions.
This comes after chief executive officer of Educate Together Paul Rowe told the Irish Times last month that spending limitations would impact on the nation's education sector and finances should be protected.
