With the
cost of accommodation to rise this September for university on-campus students, the Union of Students Ireland ( USI) is asking that the Leaving Certificate results be made available before August 13th to give students extra time to find accommodation.
Student Union president, Laura Harmon says that by bringing result date forward will help but there is a also ‘wider issue of the rise in student financial costs’ that needs to be addressed. She comments in the
Irish Times article today:
“The student maintenance grant needs to be looked at. It currently works out at €84 a week, which is very little to survive on when the cost of living at college is around €1,000 a month, according to a study carried out by DIT Campus Life.”
With the lack of private rental properties available for students, especially in Dublin, and rise in on-campus rates the USI believe that ‘Government intervention would be required to deal with the crisis.’
