Violent video games 'can damage young minds'

Posted by SchoolDays Newshound on 27/03/2012. Violent video games 'can damage young minds'Tags: Parenting Kids Health

Computer console use can not only have a detrimental effect on a child's health but also on their minds, it has been claimed.

The UK's Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) has raised concerns about the consequences of youngsters playing violent video games.

It was suggested many children spend hours a days sat in their bedrooms playing games that may not be appropriate for their age.

ATL general secretary Dr Mary Bousted commented that very violent games can have a damaging effect on "tender young minds".

Dr Bousted added: "If you have got a game in the house it's very difficult to police who's playing it."

As well as noting the mental repercussions, the expert warned that children who regularly take part in this pastime are missing out on interacting with others and getting much needed exercise.

Elsewhere, a recent Cork Institute of technology study reported by the Irish Independent revealed one in ten teenagers have fallen victim to bullying via the internet.
