Hi I am thinking of sending my children to a gaelscoil, but we are not an irish speaking family. For anyone out there who has been to a gaelscoil, coming from a family who do not speak irish at home - what are your feelings. Was it more than difficult? Did you find it harder than kids from irish speaking families? did your education suffer? would really like to hear peoples thoughts on this.

Hi,
Most parents who send their children to a gaelscoil don´t come from Irish-speaking family backgrounds and therefore initially don´t speak Irish in the home. That said many parents do go back/on to learn/improve upon their Irish to help their children´s education.
There are many benefits the Irish-medium education, and these are enhanced in schools that implement early total immersion (http://www.rogha.org/index_eng.htm).
I attended a early childhood conference recently where it was stated that parents´ influence on the development of their child (0-6 years) is eight times more important than any other factor.
Therefore it is important to support your child´s learning, play with them, talk and listen to them, read with them, etc.
Attending a naonra prior to attending a gaelscoil is also estremely beneficial for the child and there an excellent naonra in this area.

Hi,

I just sent my child to a gaelscoil this year. Now I have very little irish but it seems to me as you help your child with homework what little irish you have will come back to you! Also my son is having great fun telling me new words and loves showing off that he knows words that I don´t! Also, the teachers at my son´s school are wonderful, they will help you out no problem, I am attempting to translate my sons favourite story into irish and the support I am getting is amazing! I would recommend a gaelscoil and best of luck to you
