Acceptance Commitment Training for Parents of Children with ASD

Acceptance Commitment Training for Parents of Children with ASD           reply
24/03/2012 09:57 - Special Needs / Tutors Required (Locality: Galway)
-----------------------------------
ACT Now Ireland are delighted to announce a 1 day workshop tailored specifically for parents of children with an autism spectrum disorder and professionals working with children with an ASD and their families.

Why ACT for parents of children with ASD?
Past research has shown that ACT can reduce levels of distress and depression among parents of children with autism. The skills taught through ACT are related to improved well being among mothers of children with autism. Research with fathers suggests that psychological acceptance can alleviate the impact of child problem behaviour on levels of anxiety, depression and stress. Acceptance is also related to fathers’ perceptions of positive gain of raising a child with a disability. Other research has shown that fathers who engage in mindful parenting practices report being more involved in parenting tasks and facilitating their child’s socialisation.

About the workshop?
The workshop will be led by Aisling Curtin, who is a Counselling Psychologist and Director of ACT Now Ireland. She has over 6 years experience working with those who have an ASD and their parents. Aisling has trained extensively in ACT in the US, Australia and UK and has led hundreds of ACT and mindfulness-based groups and workshops in education, mental health, psycho-oncology, and community settings to name a few.
