| John Scottus schools - parents be sure you will be happy with the ethos.            18/10/2007 02:55 - School Specific --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have personal experience of this school and would advise parents of prospective pupils to investigate thoroughly the philosophy that is being taught in the School. It is not always made clear that the philosophy being taught (and infuses all subject teaching) is comprised of the teachings of the School of Philosophy and Economic Science (known in England as the School of Economic Science where they run some affiliated children´s schools also). These teachings are mainly based, on the words of Mr Leon MacLaren, former leader (now deceased) and on his conversations with his guru, from the Hindu tradition in India. No harm in itself in this age of religious tolerance (which i heartily endorse) however the content of the teachings may surprise some as it includes very fixed ideas about gender differences, disability and the merits of certain music and literature, for example. Female teachers in John Scottus are expected to wear skirts (as are all women in the movement, though apparently things are loosening up somewhat in England where some women involved are starting to take to wearing trousers). I attach some links for those who wish to investigate the philosophy (closer to a religious movement really) taught in the school: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/stjamesreport/ - a report from a former Governor of an affiliated school (St James in London). http://www.stjamesinquiry.org/ - a group of parents involved with St James, who are seeking change. http://www.iirep.com/Report/report.htm - Independent report commissioned by St James governors into abuses in the School. This report is not without criticism - esp. in relation to its terms of reference. Inform are an organisation who produce factual and balanced information on new religious or spiritual movements and they are based in the London School of Economics (not to be confused with the School of Philosophy and Economic Science). They have produced a leaflet on the School of Economic Science. In Ireland this is known as the School of Philosophy and Economic Science. It is under their ethos that John Scottus School is run, teachers in the school are expected (with occasional exceptions) to be attending members of the adult SPES and the board of governors and patron are also comprised mostly of members of the adult SPES. They produced a leaflet on the SES in England which is at: http://informserve.co.uk/INFORM/Inform_Leaflet_SES_2007.pdf Parents who have any questions or concerns in relation to John Scottus can contact: inform@lse.ac.uk Dialogue Ireland is an organization who are “motivated by the inalienable right to religious freedom, inspired by Christian values, Dialogue Ireland is an independent Trust that seeks to promote people’s freedom to make informed choices about religious, spiritual and philosophical beliefs”. Their information on the School of Philosophy and Economic Science is at http://www.esatclear.ie/~dialogueireland/a2z/schoolphil/ There is a message board also where former pupils and parents have posted about their concerns: http://www.whyaretheydead.net/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=7 Good luck!
| | JOHN SCOTTUS National School John Scottus schools parents be sure you will be happy with the ethos. 0710180255            21/11 11:54 - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Scottus really does ´get it´. The world has changed over the past 50 years, but the education system has struggled to keep pace. John Scottus is the only national school in my area that understands what we all need to succeed in TODAY´s world. Their website says it all - the school has updated it over the past year, making it even easier to understand. The school has also stepped up its efforts in terms of communicating with parents. For anyone concerned about outdated comments found when ´Googling´ the school - I have only one thing to say: my child is happier than she ever was before. She is calm. She is learning. The school has transformed her. And how come no one has ever mentioned anything about the tiny class sizes?! I know that my child is not going to ´fall through the cracks´ the way so many children do in large classes at other schools.

The school hasreally helped themand cares for their development in a positive way It isso much better for them ,with small classes and people who care abbout them as people. There is none of the heavy cult type issues that this person refers to at the school and i would encourage parents to go along and see for themselves rather than reading outdated rubbish such as this web site is hosting
