5 Great Irish Books for Children to Read in 2022

Supporting Irish writers, we have compiled a list of books we think the SchoolDay audience will love! Full of fun characters for children to become attached to and lessons in each one to learn from; here is our top 5 picks:

Author Emma Ledden - My Daddy is my Hero

Emma writes beautiful books including My Mammy Knows Everything and All the Rainbows Colours, both promoting diversity, kindness and celebrating special people in our lives.

My Daddy is My Hero continues this trend with a celebration of the special relationship between father and child.

Author Niall Breslin – The Chill Skill

Niall brings another mindfulness driven book to young children with this beautifully illustrated book. It helps children manage anger when things don't go their way. When Sam's mum takes her phone back, Sam begins to feel really cross.

So, Grandad teaches her a breathing technique which puts out the angry flames that are making her feel hot and bothered.

Author Sarah Webb – The Little Bee Charmer of Henrietta Street

Sarah writes about Eliza Kane and her brother Jonty in Dublin in 1911. When they move from the leafy suburbs of Rathmines to a tenement flat on Henrietta Street they are in for a shock. Pigs and ponies in the yard, rats in the hallways and cockroaches or 'clocks' underfoot! When they meet their new neighbour, Annie, a kind and practical teenager and her brothers, and a travelling circus comes to town, offering them both jobs, helping Madam Ada, the bee charmer, and Albert the dog trainer, things start to look up.

Author Corrinne Averiss – A Song in the Mist

Chi is a panda who loves to listen. Being silent brings sounds to her ears: the swish of bamboo, the chitter of birds, and then one day, a new sound, gentle and sweet. The sound leads Chi to a boy, who blows breath through a piece of bamboo. Chi is enchanted and longs to make friends, but she is shy and hides instead. As the boy searches for Chi and mist gathers in the forest, she must find the courage to help him-even if it means being seen

Author Emma Chichester Clark - Polly Pecorino

In this beautifully crafted story, we meet a brave and kind girl, Polly Pecorino, who is a constant rescuer of small animals. She lives in a small town called Abbeville and goes about her daily life in the usual way. Though Polly is depicted as an ordinary schoolgirl, there is something unusual about this extraordinary girl – she can talk to animals – and only her Uncle Stan and parents know about her gift. And so, the story unfolds.
