Back to School Bags for your Teenager

Teenagers go through food, clothes and moods at an alarming rate, so there’s no wonder that the good quality rucksack or school bag you bought them last term is either missing or has been destroyed over the course of the year. School bags can be expensive but cheaper ones tend not to last very long, so here at Schooldays.ie we’ve searched for some of the best school bags for teens for every budget! Don't forget to check out our sister article for Back to School Bags for Kids!

Long-lasting bags

The Jansport Original
€€€

Jansport have been around for years and are one of the most popular and reliable school bags for both girls and boys. They come in multitude of colours and materials, and are tough, durable and come with laptop compartments. Although they are a little pricey, retailing at around €50, they will withstand the long walks home and the piles of school books for years! Jansport bags can be found in stores nationwide

Eastpak Bags
€€€

Eastpak began as a military backpack supplier for the US army back in the 50s, so they know how to make a bag that will test the limits of any teenager. They do tons of styles but their bestseller is the original backpack that many Irish kids used for school in the past. Their classic canvas backpack comes in 52 colours and they also have an array of fun prints. Eastpak are just a tad more expensive at around €60. Available to purchase in stores nationwide.

Back Support

Secondary students have a lot to deal with. Not only does their work load increase dramatically, but their books get bigger, thicker and heavier. Carrying all of that weight on their backs will cause some serious issues down the line, including bad posture and back pain. Read our article for some advice on how to lessen the load.

Below are some of the best school bags on the market which take our young teenagers' spinal development into account. Some are quite expensive but if you are concerned about the weight of your child's school bag then they are worth forking out the euros for.

Kånken Bags
€€€€

This Swedish manufacturer's motto is "Straight backs are happy backs!" This super trendy, colourful vintage bag has been around since the 70s and comes in loads of colours, sizes with laptop compartment available.. These are long lasting, hard wearing bags that are still fashionable while providing good back support. It is a sturdy bag that can be kept clean easily and has padding to stop sore backs. Ideal for cycling, school books or travelling. These bags can be purchased online at www.ilovemykanken.com. Prices between €65 and €85 but they do offer free worldwide shipping.

Ergobags
€€€€

Ergobags are bags that are made with the student in mind. The bag fits comfortably close to the back of the child. The broad anatomically shaped hip belt distributes the weight from the shoulders to the stable pelvic area. The height-adjustable chest strap supports a perfect fit while the interior organization offers lots of space. These bags are well thought out in design; they take the strain off the back, keep a solid stand on their own and reflect light for safety while walking home. Well worth its rather hefty price tag. Also available to buy online at www.ergobag.com. The bags come in at just under €100.

Cycling Bags

If your teen is commuting to school, a waterproof bag that is suitable for cycling (plus wet gear, books, electronics) and can withstand a beating is a must. There are many types of bags on the market for cycling.

Chrome Messenger bag
€€€€

This bag is extremely hard wearing, waterproof and with compartments for laptops, lights etc and come in range of colours and sizes. Though they start at around 80 euro, these bags are likely to last from Junior Cert right up to college graduation!

Pannier Bike Bags
€€

The Pannier is an excellent option for students who cycle to and from school everyday. Two bags attach to either side of the rear wheel of the bike (a rack is needed) and act much like a courier's pack. Your child can keep a school bag in their locker for during the day and transfer any books they need into their bike bags for the trip home. They are weather proof, have plenty of storage with room for a laptop and eliminates the threat of back pain. Relatively inexpensive too! Please note that if the bike does not already have one, you will need to buy a Pannier rack (about €30) along with the bags. BikeHut list two pannier bags for €24 on halfords.ie. There are many other, more stylish options available but they are more expensive.

P.E. Gear bags/Inexpensive Schoolbags

Large chain stores such as Argos and Debenhams offer School bags for those on a smaller budget. Largely sports related, these bags are great for books or sports gear.

Nike

If your budget is strained or you just don't like the idea of spending a fortune on a bag that will undoubtedly be covered in Tipex within a month, then check out this navy Nike backpack. For under 20euro, no doubt it is a bargain. However, there are many mixed reviews of Nike school bags online, some of which state that their Nike bags started to fray and rip after only a few months of wear.
