History websites and apps to help the kids out with their homework

Last month, we brought you the top apps and websites to help the little ones out with their maths. This time round, we are highlighting some useful resources to help the kids rise to the top of their history class.

History can be a fun and exciting subject to learn. However, all too often it is dismissed by kids as boring and useless. Getting the kids interested in their history lessons isn’t always an easy job, but with the help of a few quality resources, the kids may soon be fascinated by the past.

Here are our top picks for primary school age kids:

Websites

Irishpotatofamine.org
This site takes kids on an interactive tour of the famine. With clickable pictures, kids can gain an insight into what life was like during the famine. By using bright colours and simple illustrations, the site manages to make learning about the famine fun and interesting for young kids.

Easter1916.ie
While younger kids may not be able to navigate the site themselves, with the help of an adult, kids will be able to learn all about the 1916 easter rising. With a day-by-day account of events, photos, videos and a dedicated primary school’s section, kids will soon be well clued in on the important events that happened in 1916.

Bbc.co.uk
The BBC have a fantastic primary schools section on their website, with games and information on a range of topics including World War II, the Vikings, the Romans, the Ancient Greeks and much more. An interactive timeline allows kids to see when events took place throughout history. The site is designed to be very child friendly, with colourful cartoon pictures throughout.

Apps

Back in time
Back in time aims to take the user on a stunning exploration of the history of our universe, earth, life and civilisation. Custom made animations bring events to life, with lots of interesting facts provided along the way. Users young and old will love this one, as an imaginary clock guides you through history in a single 24 hour period - from the big bang at 00.00 hours to modern day at midnight.

World History for kids
World History for Kids is a history app available on most devices with a free demo you can download before you buy. This is a unique educational app that brings fun into learning history told through a narrative timeline, taking in all key events from the beginning of human history right up to the 20th century. Historical events are separated into sections that include an audio narrative, animations, facts and charts that summarise each period. It allows kids to interact and travel back and forth through time between these periods, developing a child’s understanding of the historical timeline of humankind.

A history of Ireland in 100 objects
This app tells the story of Ireland through photos, film and audio of the key objects in Irish history. Starting at 5,000 BC, the course of Irish history can be traced all the way through to 2013.
