Looking for the best place to go for a week long relaxing holiday with the family for the Halloween break? Look no further, here is Schooldays.ie breakdown of the best of the beautiful, exotic and anicent Turkey this autumn.

Where is it?

Turkey begins with it’s smallest part in the European mediterranean, west of Greece and continues into the middle east bordering 8 countries including Bulgaria, and Iran. It’s flight time to major airports from Ireland is around 4 or 5 hours.

What’s the weather like?

It’s weather can be a warm 19 degrees in the north (Istanbul) and a very hot 30 degrees in the southern coasts with 8 hours of sunshine per day and a warm 24 degrees sea temperature. It has a few days of rain in October and low humidity.

Best places for families?

There are lots of beaches along the Turkish mediterranean Aegean coast and plenty to see and do in it’s ancient towns and cities, here are the highlights:

Kusadasi, Izmir - Kusadasi the west coast of Aegean coastline with stretches of beaches, filled with resorts, water sports and everything you expect for families. Check out the Aqua Fantasy for the kids or spend some time in the Dilek National Park. or relax on Long Beach.

Antalya - The resort town of Antalya is a mediterranean enclave filled with aquariums, aqua parks, water sports and even jeep safari, keeping both teens and kids happy. Or hit the many small sandy beaches with the smaller children..

Yalikavak - Bodrum - The beachside coastal town Bodrum is full of everything you expect from a resort town. If you have older kids and looking to get away from the beach, try heading to the town of Yalikavak has more for big kids like horse riding, cycling and is a bit cheaper than the nearby resort town.

Dalyan, Dalaman. - Dalyan is laid back spot perfect for families with beach sports, river tours and ancient sites to see. Iztuzu beach is stunning and the nearby famous sulphur mud baths are a chance for everyone to get muddy.

Where else to go?

Izmir Town and Region

Izmir is the third largest city in Turkey with a large population, and it is the second biggest port after Istanbul. A former ancient town, now a well developed city, there are plenty of sights and things to check out if you are spending a day or two there. The main square is famous for its clock tower, so is its walk along the Kordeon, the waterfront promenade. The local coastline hosts towns with loads of beaches with all the things you’d expect to find for families and couples. The Kemeralti Market will show you what a real Turkish bazaar should look and feel like. For kids, check out dodgems and roller coasters and big wheel in Lunapark at The Kulturpark.

Maramis

For those with a budget, check out the tree-lined mountains of the seaside resort town of Marmaris, a port town with huge tourist crowds, so there are plenty of hotels that have both swimming pools and kids clubs. Because it’s a large budget resort check out some of the quieter resort hotels that are kid friendly. If you don't fancy the bright lights of a resort town and fancy some village life, head out along the eastern side of Bozburan peninsula to it’s quiet sleepy picturesque coves of Turunc, or Kumlubuk.

Bodrum

Bodrum is south-west of Turkey and away from the crowds that offers beautiful woodland hills and crystal seas. The peninsula has lots of crowd free beaches for those who want a quiet holiday, with enough coves that you could find your own hidden beach. Ortakent is a good option if you have older kids as there are a range of water sports. For younger families there is plenty to do in the nearby resort towns with great beaches, aqua parks, hotels with kids clubs. For parents, there are plenty of bars, shopping, cafes and historical sights with the 600 year old St. Peters Castle, underwater museum and a 4th century amphitheatre.
