Online Leaving Cert Marking 2019
Online marking for some Leaving Cert subjects is to be introduced this year, in a bid to make the process more accurate and faster. The SEC started a pilot in online marking in the Junior Cert in 2016, and plans a gradual extension across both Junior and Leaving Certs, up to 2022. This year the following subjects are to be marked online.
Students sit their examinations in the normal way. When the scripts are returned to the Examinations Commission, their scripts will be scanned and will become and electronic script. Then the scanned images of the candidates examination script will be marked by examiners online using specially designed software. The scripts are not corrected by the software - they are corrected by examiners who use the software to mark the scripts.
Points to be aware of
- Candidates in these subjects are required to complete their responses in black or blue pen only. Gel pens cannot be used. Pencil can be used for completing diagrams and graphs.
- The answer books for Leaving Cert Biology, Chemistry and Physics contain graph paper so loose sheets of graph paper will not be provided.
- It is important that candidates complete their responses in the spaces provided in the answer books so that they are correctly captured by the scanning process. Writing outside these areas run a risk that the answer will not be seen by the examiner.
- Scripts marked online, will be available for online viewing as part of the ‘Viewing scripts option’ on 2oth & 21st August.
- Students must register for an online account with the Examinations Commission in order to access all of the Results and Appeals Services. This includes for viewing leaving certificate results, viewing of scripts marked online, appeal applications and appeal results access. To register, candidates will need their PIN letter from the SEC – these letters will issue in Mid-May.
