Parents Association Fundraising Survey Results - Autumn 2007

The results of our survey have provided some interesting if perhaps not unsurprising data. Sadly to say still today in Ireland many of the funds raised by the Parent’s Association around the country are crucial to the day to day running of the school with a significant amount of the funds being spent on basic needs and maintenance of schools nationwide.

However, respondents also showed that a large proportion of the funds raised were being spent on the overall development of your children with money being spent on a broad range of extra curricular activities including music, drama, tennis and swimming lessons as well raising money for social entertainment activities for the children like Annual School Tours or Christmas Parties. A significant number of schools indicated that they also held at least one fundraising activity for charity during the school year.

What is clear from the data is that parents are contributing significant amounts of money in order to help improve schools all over the country. These funds are being raised from a wide range of activities from the traditional cake sale to Christmas Card Projects supported by local businesses.

One man’s rubbish is another man’s gold as they say, and some parents have been really innovative in how they have raised funds, with one Parents Association realising the value of old copper piping, which can fetch up to €4.10 per kilo, this can add up very quickly with old pipes & cylinders lying around many family homes being collected in school on a weekly or monthly basis.

Other imaginative and fun activities used to raise funds noted from the survey included “Buy a Brick Campaign”, whereby a family of children can leave their mark on their school forever by buying a brick in a new school extension, you also had Cookery Demonstrations for busy parents and Kids Quizzes to get the brain ticking.
