Packing for Summer Camp

Hints and Tips

With so many camp choices, packing for the kids away camps can be a bit of a challenge. Kids will be in the sun, in the rain, indoors, and outdoors and will need things they dont think they'll need when packing. Parent's have to anticipate all their child's needs but thankfully most camps provide a list of the necessities. SchoolDays.ie have compiled the very best hints and tips for your kids packing needs, just one less thing for you to worry about.

1. Clothing = Layers

T shirts, hoodies, fleece, jeans, trackie bottoms, shorts,( forever optimistic with the weather) swimwear and water proof jacket, optimistic but prepared! Undies, socks, pjs and maybe something special for a night out. Roll clothes when packing, saves space and also deters creasing.

2. Ziploc bags are your best friend

Plan outfits for each day and place them in individual Ziploc bags. After the clothes are worn, they can simply be placed back in the bag. Make sure and label everything. This way, your child is organised each morning and the added bonus will be wet and dirty clothes will be packed separately. The post camp washing will be less daunting.

3. Towels.

Micro light towels are fantastic space savers and quick drying too. Check out Decathlon online. Robies are also fantastic for getting changed outdoors.

4. Toiletries

Miniature size refill bottles are available in Penny's and Boots and will save space in your child's toiletry bag . Dry shampoo will be a saviour and face wipes are great to have in the bag too and lastly don’t forget sun cream.

5. Water flask

Keeping hydrated is super important especially with all the fantastic activities. Personalised water flasks are a great idea, and they can save any mix ups. Make sure you get something sturdy, though, nothing worse than a broken water bottle ruining everything in your bag! Sports bottles can be good, as they are often made of durable plastic. Other good options can be metal with a tight closing mechanism.

6. Fresh Smell

Eliminate bag odours by keeping it fresh, Place a few drops of Lemon or Lavender essential oil on cotton wool balls then put them inside the bag. Make sure there's some deodorant in the bag, which can be used to quickly disperse some bad bag smell. Your child will also be grateful of a backup if they've forgotten some in their toiletries.

7. Mobile Phones

Summer Camps policies on mobile phones vary so check if they will have access to their phone and that they have sufficient credit to contact you if they need to. Think of putting a protective case on the phone, just in case of accidents during summer camp activities. If the camp allows phone use, don't forget the charger!

8. Making Memories

Let your child create some lasting memories, why not pack a journal that they can add to? It doesn't take up much space and will serve as a great memento of their summer camp for years to come.

Don't worry if it takes your child a little while to settle in, most don't want to come home after the first week.
