It seems that John Scottus Primary School have responded and have updated their prospectus which is available online on their website. This new prospectus makes the ethos of the school very clear to prospective parents in my view. I would still recommend that parents investigate the philosophy as much as possible beforehand as its a philosophy of the divine or God rather than a philosophy as generally understood. For example modern philosophy is not studied at all. The science/nature programme of the school"is designed to encourage observation and to put back into science a sense of the divine". I´m sure many parents might agree with this but best be sure that you are happy with for example a very skeptical attitude to the theory of evolution. However its great to see that they are making a strong effort to be more open and upfront about what they are teaching but I would still advise parents to investigate the philosophy and history of this sect thoroughly as their children will be steeped in it almost every minute of their very long school day

"Don´t send your children to St James Independent Schools" (John Scottus is an associated school of St James).
Its a facebook group set up by former pupils to draw attention to their belief that the School of Philosophy and Economic Science is a cult and that the schools are set up to set up young children in their beliefs. The more I find out, the more I agree with this view.

My daughter is attending John Scottus primary, the teachers have been excellent, she is delighted to be going to school there.
The ethos in my view is inclusive to all, accepting and open minded.

Hi Stephen
I´m glad your daughter is happy there. When you say the ethos is inclusive to all and accepting and open minded, can I ask you, in your view, what is the ethos of the school?

Clara Salaman, an actress and writer, has written an autobiographical novel based on her experiences of going to St. James school in London which is run by the same people and same ethos as John Scottus School. She also speaks about her experience of growing up with parents involved in a secretive religious organisation. It is the same organisation who run John Scottus School.

Details about her book are available here:
http://www.guardianbookshop.co.uk/BerteShopWeb/viewProduct.do?ISBN=9780141041261 (even the girls´ uniform of St. James and John Scottus are very similar as you can see from the cover image of the book).

and interviews with Clara Salaman about her book and her experience of growing up with parents who are involved with the organisation (who also run John Scottus School) are here:

A discussion of the book by ex-pupils of SES schools like John Scottus, is available here: http://www.ses-forums.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=688

I notice some of the links above are no longer valid - I´ll see if I can update them.

It is very disturbing that the SES is today so widely dispersed and visibly prospering in Ireland; Make no mistake, this is a cult which thrives on secrecy among members. The instructors seek to indoctrinate from quite an early stage in the course. For those who get drawn in within two years or so they find they are finincially contributing to the upkeep of the organisation (weekly direct debits), if single the school seeks to decide who they should marry (usually another member);they are encouraged to spend more and more time at the school and with its members, weekends etc.
The growth in the schools both in UK and Ireland is truly amazing. They were investigated by the fraud squad in the early 80s in Dublin who were concerned at the time about the reported impact on children of attending the school which had been recently established.

Over 25 years ago the School of Philosophy or School of Economic Science was exposed as a cult in the Irish Independent (one full page story) and on RTE radio .
The personal stories of people who magaged to leave and who were prepapred to talk out against the school were heart rendering- depression, family difficulties, financial ruin, distance from friends, trying to rebuildtheir lives after their years in the school. The majority who leave will never talk about their experience. They´re told not to. Ask anyone who has done 2-3 courses and they´ll be defensive of the school, won´t want to talk about what happens there in any detail (they´re told outsiders don´t understand) and they´ll ecourage you to come and try it for yourself.
I would never send a child to them and share the concerns of Ajna.
On hearling of the investigation at the time, of which I was a part, I was warned by the then Director xxxx xxxxxxxl to watch my step as I had no idea what I was dealing with. He asked me to take my questions no further or face the consequences!
