How long should a child spend doing homework

30 mins should be the average time, after an hour it is pure pointless. The school grants the exemption, if the child meets certain criteria. I´d not exempt her though, let her listen and take part orally, but no written homework.

We have trouble with irish homework also as we are Engllish and find it tough. My eldest son has ASD which make it more difficult. What I found good is a free translator online. Sometimes though it dosen´t make sense and we have to work what it is trying to say but otherwise it cuts down on the amount of time we have to spend on the Irish. So far this week the teacher had been good. Less Irish homework.

Sounds ridiculously long to me. My child in 3rd class spends a half hour total on homework. Granted if he has an Irish poem to learn it could take another twenty minutes but max total homework would be one hour and that would be unusual. An hour and a half on Irish alone is too long and must be very demotivating for your daughter.

BTW, a son of a neighbour of mine has an Irish exemption but he has been encouraged to still take part. It´s better as there is foundation level Irish at second level and this is what is being recommended rather than opting out completely.

I agree with Kincara - 30 mins should be the average time!

Hi,

My daughter is in third class. She has dyslexia and finds Irish very hard. She spend a good hour if not an hour and a half doing the Irish homework most evenings. I think that this is too long, but when I discussed the issue with her teacher, I was told that this length of time was usual. (The psychologist recommended her getting an exemption from Irish, but the school don´t want to apply for one for her).
Is this length of time normal? Can anyone help.

I was just wondering, since the Op hasn´t been back, how things are going?
