A free series of lectures to promote a new accessible service designed for children and adults with more significant needs. The collection of toys and assistive technology can be borrowed free of charge in any community library throughout Kildare.

Can I Play Too? A Demonstration of Toys from the Collection
Date & Venue: Athy Community Library: Tuesday 12th April
Leixlip Community Library: Thursday 14th April
Time: Athy Community Library: 7.30 – 9.00pm
Leixlip Community Library: 7.30 – 9.30pm
Guest Speaker: Dorothy Armstrong, Occupational Therapist with a private practice in Maynooth for children and young people. She also works as a lecturer in Occupational Therapy in NUI Galway.

Dorothy will be giving a talk on the importance of play for the development
of children with special needs and will be introducing the innovative Toys,
Technology and Training project. This is a free service that allows parents and teachers to borrow toys and technology specially designed for children with special needs through their local library in Kildare. Dorothy will demonstrate the use of a selection of the toys available in the catalogues and host a question and answer session.
Language: From Little Ones to Learners
Date & Venue: Athy Community Library: Tuesday 3rd May
Leixlip Community Library: Thursday 5th May
Time: (both venues) 7.30 – 9.00pm
Guest Speaker: Claire Kennedy, Speech and Language Therapist, Sensational
Kids.

Description: Claire will introduce the role of a Speech and Language Therapist and the application of Speech and Language Therapy techniques in everyday activities with children. She will demonstrate these techniques using examples from the range of items available to borrow from the Leixlip and Athy toy catalogues.

Claire will also discuss:
• Speech Therapy and Early Intervention
• Speech Therapy and Getting Set for School
• Speech Therapy and Literacy
• Questions from the audience


Using Technology to Help Children and Young Adults with Special Needs
Date: Thursday 19th May
Time: 7.30 – 9.00pm
Venue: Leixlip Community Library

This evening, Dorothy will focus on the technology available to borrowers from the collection, and how it could be used to help children and young adults with special needs. There will be an opportunity to see some of this technology working, and Dorothy will host a question and answer session.
