When's the best time to go on a family break?

Irish schools have a number of breaks throughout the year, all of which provide great opportunities to take a family holiday. To help you schedule your next family break, we've put together a basic guide on when the school holidays happen. You can also check our school calendar for specific school holiday dates. Be sure to double-check the dates with your school, though, as they can sometimes vary.

The summer holiday runs throughout July and August for primary schools, with the addition of June for secondary schools.

The first school mid-term break is the October school holiday - often referred to as the Halloween school holiday - and it is usually the last week of October.

The Christmas school holiday lasts between 17 and 21 days and usually goes from the last school day before the 23rd of December to the first weekday after the 6th of January.

The second school mid-term break lasts from two to five days for primary schools and one week for secondary schools. It's generally taken in the middle of February.

The Easter school holiday lasts for 10 school days (16 days inclusive) and begins a week before Easter. It finishes the second Monday after Easter.

Of course, there are also the nine bank holidays and a number of in-service days, all of which provide a long weekend that could be ideal for a short family break.
