Minister for Public Spending Brendan Howlin has issued a warning to
teachers that the government are looking to remove those who are not performing.
During an interview with the Irish Independent, Mr Howlin warned the performance of people in public sector jobs will be scrutinised much more closely from now on.
He said: "Children get one go at education and they can't have that squandered by somebody who just can't perform."
Mr Howlin also stated that it is "not acceptable" that parents feel the need to utilise grinds services purely because their child's teacher in a certain subject is not up to standard.
He also announced that there will be up to 2,500 voluntary redundancies within the public sector in the coming year.
Although they are likely to hold differing views, Mr Howlin said that there is now a "greater understanding" between Minister for Education Ruari Quinn and teaching unions and a "realisation" that underperforming teachers need to be moved on.
