Minister for Education and Skills Ruairi Quinn has welcomed the start of construction on eight schools that are to be delivered under the Public Private Partnership (PPP).

These schools are the third bundle to be built under the Department of Education and Skills' school PPP programme and are the first public sector projects to be funded under the model since June 2010.

Mr Quinn commented: "I am particularly pleased that the European Investment Bank has again decided to support the Department's schools capital investment programme with a loan of €50 million which will assist in funding this investment."

The eight schools will be built in Westmeath, Limerick, Donegal, Leitrim, Wexford, Galway and Waterford and will provide accommodation for 5,700 students.

Earlier this year, Mr Quinn announced a five-year Schools Capital Programme worth €1.5 billion, which will see a total of 275 major school building projects commence between now and 2016.
