The Budget has revealed that there will be substantial spending cuts for the
education system in Ireland.
Yesterday (December 7th 2010), the Irish government announced the changes to the country's economic plans.
Among the main features of the new Budget are reductions to spending on education, as well as an increase in fees.
The amount of money provided for schools and colleges will be reduced by five per cent.
Education costs for parents will also rise, with an increase of 500 euros to 2,000 euros for third level students.
In addition to this, a transport fee of 50 euros per year will be charged for pupils in primary schools, up to a total of 110 euros per family.
The new Budget is expected to achieve savings of six billion euros for the country, including spending reductions on social welfare and an increase in tax revenues, as well as a cut in Irish education funds.
