More than 57,500 students across the country will find out the results of their
Leaving Certificate exams today (August 17th) and discover whether they have earned enough points for their third-level courses of choice.
Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn stated all candidates should be proud of their achievements, saying: "Today is the culmination of many years of hard work and I hope that your dedication is reflected in the results that you receive".
It was revealed that ten pupils achieved the best possible results of eight A1s in higher level papers, while another 39 picked up seven A1s and 92 received six.
However, the failure rates for maths and science were again high, with over 4,000 maths students not passing their exams.
Just 16 per cent of students opted to take the higher maths paper, with the Minister admitting more must be done to improve this figure.
Mr Quinn urged those who have not done as well as expected to consider retaking their exams, adding it is "certainly is not a wasted year".
