What better way to have fun with the kids than cooking up some special Halloween grub for a kid’s party. Traditionally, the Samhain Festival, Ireland’s ancient Celtic festival, celebrated the passing of seasons with a party that shared food with people who had less than them. Halloween was also a time to celebrate food because of the final harvest that would take place in the autumn time. The emphasis used to be on wild game, fruits and vegetables, and cider from apples. But now things are a little more sugary as this night has become about children having freaky fun and having lots of treats. Check out some of our Ghoulish Food to create with the kids.
Traditionally, costumes were worn by our ancient ancestors to celebrate the Samhain Festival and to ward off evil spirits. Gatherings of people would celebrate the season changing from summer to winter, which was thought to be when the dead passed into the next world. Villagers would dress up, light bonfires to celebrate the night, and this too has been brought into our modern interpretation of Halloween. Now kids have the most fun in getting dressed-up and scaring each other (and themselves). Here we have some great Halloween Costumes Ideas for kids and for teens that you can make at home.
Halloween party games are an essential part of any Halloween party for kids. Everybody remembers celebrating Halloween at home with the family with games like dunking for apples, making spooky Halloween decorations, carving a pumpkin and generally going a little sugar-induced crazy. Things are no different and we have plenty of homemade party games you can do and decoration ideas you can make with the kids.
Ireland is the birthplace of Halloween so we know how to celebrate it best and have mixture of the traditional and modern in all our activities. Bram stoker, the writer of Dracula, was born in Dublin and there is a festival dedicated to all things vampirish in Dublin this October. There is also plenty more around the country including the ‘biggest Halloween event’ boasted by the Galway’s Aboo Festival taking place in her Latin quarter this year, with a beastly Macnas street parade planned.
Nationwide, there is plenty for all families that will see special spooky forest walks, workshops, fireworks, scary costumes and arts and crafts. Check out our Events Calender for events near you or see our top favourite events around the country here.
